What’s The Process For Laminate Flooring Installation

Laminate floors are one of the most popular types of flooring choices for homes and commercial spaces today. They are best suited for areas where excessive moisture is not present such as bedrooms, living areas, kitchens, hallways, and dining areas. Other than being an inexpensive option, laminate flooring is easy to clean and maintain.

At Dreyco Flooring & Design we have been offering flooring services for over 45 years. Let’s take a look at the process we follow for laminate flooring installation.

The Room is Prepared

Before laminate flooring is laid down, the room must be prepared. First, the laminate plank packages are opened and left in the room that they are meant to be installed in, for at least 48 hours. This allows the planks to adjust to the temperature and humidity.

The floor is checked for moisture and we ensure that the laminate flooring is absolutely dry. Next, the floors are cleaned thoroughly in the area where we want to install the laminate. A moisture barrier such as a plastic lining may be laid down on the floor and padding may be used over this.

The Doorways are Trimmed

After the room and floor are prepared, the doorways are trimmed. This is to ensure that the laminate planks fit in a neat and tidy way around all doorways. The side jambs and door casings are trimmed and this is a crucial step that should not be missed. Usually, the underlayment and the laminate flooring are placed as a guide so that we know exactly how much to trim away. Machinery like a handsaw or an electric oscillating multi tool is used to cut across the top of the flooring as well as the casing.

Accurate Measurements are Taken

Before installing the laminate panels, the room is measured and the width of each plank is measured as well. The width of the room is divided by the width of each plank and this will tell us how many planks we need in total. Some planks may need to be trimmed to ensure that they fit. We may use a table saw, a miter saw, handsaw, laminate cutter, or a circular saw to trim the planks.

The Laminate Flooring Planks are Installed

The final steps include installing the underlayment if needed. Some planks may come with attached underlayment. All laminate flooring planks will expand when we first lay it down, so it is important to leave about 3/8th inch space along the edges of the floor along the wall. Then we install the planks making sure that they all align. The aim is to create a natural look making sure that there are no gaps between the seams in the planks.
